Cuba is a paradox. It is a poor country with an excellent healthcare system. It’s a place where poor people die of rich people’s disease. Cuba achieves life expectancy and infant mortality rates as good as or better than developed countries for a fraction of the cost. Cubans are encouraged to take personal responsibility for their health, with the support of their family doctor and their local community organisations. Medical education is of a high standard. Politically and socially Cuba is unique. People can feel strongly about Cuba, both for and against. An elective is an opportunity to see what tourists don’t see, and to make up your own mind. "I loved my elective in Cuba. I was really impressed by the running of the health system given the difficulties imposed by the embargo, and impressed by the standard of social justice in general. It made me see that another world is possible." For more information go to www.cubamedicalelectives.org Charitable Company registration no. 7329300
