Rachel Wood
Dhulikhel Hospital, Kathmandu, Nepal

Clinical interest: General medicine

“This experience really hammered home the importance of understanding someone’s motives for seeking medical help; taking into account their social context, the implications of their religious beliefs, economic standing, extent (or lack of) education and overall insight into their own health... A patient is not a patient but a person, and this project was an excellent reminder that if we are to truly improve healthcare provision worldwide, we should seek to understand the medical interaction not in isolation, but rather in view of the wider socioeconomic context of both person and politics.”
