Josephine Cambell
Rarotonga Hospital, Avarua, Cook Islands

Clinical interest: General medicine

“Rarotonga has a population of 14,000 people and there are 4,500 others living in the outer Cook Islands. There are 2 hospitals to serve the population, the largest one being in Rarotonga. Aitutaki has a small 49 bed hospital and the other islands have GP ran medical clinics. Around 300 cases per year are referred from the outer islands to Rarotonga; these would be patients whose illness needs to be treated in a hospital setting or those who need oxygen or other adjuncts that are not available on the remote islands. Patients who require more intensive medical care or have a tumour are referred to New Zealand.”
