Sean Lee
National University Hospital, Singapore

Clinical interest: Orthopedic Surgery

“I did my elective for 4 weeks at the National University Hospital (NUH) in Singapore. With Singapore being my home country, I get to enjoy the comforts of home and also learn medicine at the same time, thus conveniently killing 2 birds with one stone. In modern medicine where health systems are generally pushing doctors for early Residency programmes, I felt that it will be good to get early exposure into the specialties. Therefore I chose to do my elective in Orthopaedic Spine department. It was rather specialized and many times I have felt out of my depth, but nonetheless it was a great learning experience. Also, the early exposure will help provide me more options to consider for my future; a good selection headache that every medical student wants to have rather than having to pick specialties based on what they think they dread the least. Furthermore, experiencing the healthcare system in my home country (or any other country for that matter) will prove invaluable in the future, especially so if I were to consider going back to practice.”
