Hospital De Niños Baca Ortiz Quito, Ecuador

Hospital description

The Hospital De Ninos Baca Ortiz is a specialist paediatric hospital and is the only public hospital of its kind in Quito, the Ecuadoran capital. The hospital has limited resources and there are often long waiting lists for much-needed procedures. The surgery department at the hospital has previously been helped by otolaryngology surgeons from Stanford University; this is been of particular importance when the required procedures exceed the scope of practice of the home surgeons.

The hospital, which opened in 1948, operates under the jurisdiction of the Ecuador Ministry of Public Health and provides services in 37 paediatric specialties. In 2010 it was estimated that the hospital served 56,000 children in the emergency department at the hospital, as well as facilitating 900 outpatients and conducting between 30 and 40 surgeries daily. The hospital is a referral hospital for Ecuador and has also attracted patients from northern Peru.

The hospital strives to provide care not only for the physical aspects of disease, but also for the mental wellbeing of the child being treated. The hospital is named in tribute to Baca Ortiz spouses who donated the property for the construction of the facilities at the hospital.
