Sbrana Psychiatric Hospital Lobatse, Botswana
In the late 1970s Botswana adopted a plan to make primary mental health care available to all citizens of Botswana. This appears to have been largely successful. Prior to the plan, Lobatse Mental Hospital housed over 400 patients. It now in its old site averages under 150 in-patients.
Sbrana Psychiatric Hospital is one of modern psychiatric hospitals in Africa that would also function as a teaching hospital for the clinical rotation of medical students. Formally the Lobatse Mental Hospital the Sbrana Psychiatric Hospital opened in 2010 after redevelopment which cost a over 300 million Pula.The hospital prides itself in its recreation facilities like a football field, athletics track, gymnasium, tennis and basketball courts. Sbrana will also function as a referral hospital catering for the whole country.
