The Self Help Group for Cerebral Palsy in Nepal is a non-governmental, non-profit organisation which is fully committed to helping children and adults with Cerebral Palsy and neurological problems. Established in 1986, the organisation is registered with the Government of Nepal and affiliated with the Social Welfare Council under the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Affairs. The Cerebral Palsy Nepal is an associated organisation of The International Cerebral Palsy Society, London.
In Nepal, children with CP and their parents are often neglected. Our organisation aims to support the parents of children with CP so that they have access to effective care in order to promote and encourage independence within the limits of their disabilities.
It is important that parents are supported at home. We provide specially trained persons to make regular home visits to support children with CP and their guardians. These visits have two objectives, firstly to follow up the children who have received interventions at our complex. The second objective is to provide support to those who cannot visit our centre. We currently provide this service both within the Kathmandu valley and to 15 districts out with the valley. In 2009 we provided home services to over 700 children.
