Hogar Clinica San Juan de Dios (Projects Abroad) Cusco, Peru
This elective is organised by Projects Abroad.
Hogar Clinica San Juan de Dios is a clinic run by a catholic religious group and is attended by some of the poorest people in the country. It has relatively modern infrastructure and facilities. The symbolic payment for services and the greater amount of attention patients receive are two of the main differences between San Juan and other hospitals in Cusco. Volunteers will work in areas such as paediatrics, neurology, odontology, trauma and speech therapy.
Hogar Clinica San Juan de Dios is near our Cusco office in the area of Manuel Pardo. It has a main entrance on Av. Manzanares which is one of the side streets of Av. La Cultura, one of Cusco’s main avenues. It is about 10 minutes from the the city centre.
On our medical placements, your role is that of an intern. You will be assigned to a doctor who will act as your supervisor. You will learn though observing what the doctors and nurses do but they will also be happy to answer any questions you have. Please appreciate though that all the medical staff here are very busy.
Although you will find that you spend a lot of time learning through shadowing staff, it is sometimes possible to have a more active role. If you show enthusiasm and initiative, and you manage to develop a good relationship with the medical staff, you may find that you gain enough trust to be given more to do. As with any job – and especially in the field of medicine – you must prove yourself to be trustworthy before you are given responsibilities.
Your duties could include: recording the height and weight of new patients; taking their temperature and blood pressure; helping with vaccinations and injections; dressing wounds; helping with the administration of the facility; and possibly more complex procedures such as inserting a urine catheter.
