Projects Abroad

Projects Abroad offers a wide variety of tailor-made elective placements overseas in developing countries. These have been designed specifically to meet the needs of students training to be doctors, dentists, nurses, midwives, physiotherapists and occupational therapists.

We have 20 years of experience collaborating with medical professionals. We will provide you with a placement that not only meets your elective requirements but also gives you a full and rewarding experience of the country in which you are based. We arrange your accommodation, meals and insurance, and have strong in-country support to make sure your time abroad runs as smoothly as possible.

If you are searching for a placement with:
- specific specialities
- the chance to make a difference in a developing country
- a new and exotic backdrop to your studies

Why not let Projects Abroad do all the hard work for you?

Planning your Elective Overseas

Our elective placements are available in developing countries around the world. This is the basic checklist for a medical elective placement.

- wide variety of medical specialities
- clear daily timetables
- clearly modularised programme
- highly-qualified medical supervisor
- interpreters available when needed
- links with local primary care
- opportunities to see traditional medicine (if applicable)
- great local food and accommodation
- vibrant social environment

Accommodation is with local host families, in Projects Abroad apartments or local hostels.

Your weekends are your own. Many volunteers use this time to explore their local surroundings or travel further afield. Volunteers often do not return to the UK immediately after their elective but instead stay on and do some travelling around the country or continent where they volunteered.

Back-up and support is provided for you through our own Projects Abroad offices and staff in every destination. You will be assigned a placement supervisor but you will also have the full support of our local staff. They will give you an induction to your project and orientation of your local surroundings on your first day. They will regularly visit you at your placement to check you are happy with everything and they also organise weekly social events that bring together the volunteer community in destination.
