The Lilongwe Central Hospital was, until recently, the only referral hospital in Northern and Central Malawi, though it is now supported by the Kamuzu Central Hospital, also in Lilongwe. The hospital is currently the largest medical facility in the country. LCH is an 800+ bed government hospital in Malawi’s capital city, Lilongwe. In 2004, the hospital was a trial hospital for a Computer Based Order Entry (CBOE) system designed to improve patient care by minimising entry confusion and mistakes in prescription distribution. The pilot in the Paediatrics department demonstrated that CBOE can be successfully deployed and adopted in resource-poor settings and has a greater potential to improve patient care in developing than in developed countries.
The improvements wrought by this trial have saved time in test reruns and improved patient care at the hospital, in addition to providing a great tool for for use by hospital staff that has proven to be cost effective to maintain. The hospital is however still under-resourced and students have commented that this has helped them to learn how to assess patients without complicated equipment, which has enhanced their confidence and skills.
