The hospital is located in the Osorno region in southern Chile. It is a relatively small hospital in a rural area of the country but is close to some of the main road routes. The first hospital in Purranque was established in 1948 and worked in close conjunction with the Red Cross. The current hospital is part of the Chilean health service and is one of six hospitals in the region. This hospital works with the Global Air Rescue (TEN is not responsible for external content) services to provide high quality care to patients in need of emergency or cardiac care. The hospital also has quite a good maternity service.
Purranque is the regional capital of Los Lagos and is some 940 kilometres south of Santiago and is home to approximately 20,000 people. The hospital is located in quite a developed area but the majority of the local population is mainly employed in agriculture.
