The Hospital San Francisco De Asis, located in Quibdo, provides arange of care and has previously received assistance from Doctors Without Borders/Medecins San Frontiers (MSF) to improve facilities at the hospital, this includes both upgrading the medical facilities and providing additional training to hospital staff. This has had a particular impact on the maternity care department and the sexual health unit. The hospital also has a new neonatal ward that was donated by Medecins Sans Frontiers which has helped to improve care at the hospital.
The hospital itself is relatively small, although it is a full-service facility, the only one of its kind in the region. Until recently the mortality rate at the hospital was four times highwer than comparable facilities in Colombia, but this has reduced after the assistance provided by MSF. The hospital is also the referral centre for complicated Obstetric cases in the Choco Department.
