Murambinda Mission Hospital was established in 1968 by the Roman Catholic Sisters of the Little Company of Mary. It is located in a small town in Buhera District, in the Manicaland province of Zimbabwe, which is made up entirely of communal land with a widely scattered population of between 200,000 and 300,000 persons. It is a friendly place and has an excellent reputation and provides high quality care in difficult circumstances. It has more than 20 associated outlying nurse lead clinics. It is a 3-4 hour drive on good tarred roads South East of Harare. The hospital can arrange to collect elective students from Harare. The hospital regularly hosts Zimbabwean medical student on placement and in recent years students have come from UK, Australia, and Ireland.
The hospital has a nurse and midwifery training school which has excellent results in national examinations.
The Hospital has 120 beds with outpatients, male, female, juvenile, children’s, TB, maternity and gynaecology wards and an operating theatres for minor and major cases. It was at the forefront of the use of Antiretroviral therapy to reduce vertical transmission of HIV and in the roll out of Community based care and ARVs for people living with HIV and AIDS. It has had support from MSF and TB Alert .
In addition Murambinda has a well developed Home Based Care program that provides support for those with HIV and AIDS. It also has a Child and Adolescent resource Centre that provides psychological and social support to children and adolescents living with HIV/AIDS.
The Hospital is actively supported by a long term link with Friends of Murambinda Hospital (UK registered Charity 1073978), a network of UK professionals who have previously worked at Murambinda and who can put you in touch with people who have previously spent there Medical Electives at Murambinda.
