The Centro Materno Infantil San Lorenzo De Las Minas is a specialist maternity hospital in the Mine neighbourhood of Santo Domingo, a city in the eastern region of the Dominican Republic. The hospital is renowned in the Dominican Republic and is a busy, publicly run institution.
The hospital is equipped to handle 1,500 to 2,000 births a year, however, because the hospital is a free service, it routinely handles 12,000 to 13,000 births annually, which puts a great strain on resources. Additionally, many women travel from surrounding villages and from Haiti to receive treatment, which causes great congestion in the hospital.
In 2012 the hospital received a new extension which includes capacity for an additional 75 beds, 23 clinics for general and specialised consultation, a delivery room, a surgery and an obstetrics area, and a large intensive care unit. The hospital has also been equipped with a new Blood Bank, a new emergency facility, a modern air conditioning system and a new electrical system to improve the care services offered at the hospital.
