The Grenada Genera; Hospital is located in St George’s, the capital of Grenada; the hospital is a busy one and patients present with a huge range of conditions. The hospital however, is in need of updating as the resources that have been provided recently have been limited. The hospital has also be prevented fron charing for care in the Intensive Care Unit, where until January 2011, patients could be charged $740US for a stay in the ICU.
Given the proximity to the United States and the association with St George’s School of Medicine, which has an international reputation, the facilities are not very advanced. However, despite these limitations the hospital can provide a good elective for those interested in Paediatrics as it enables students to view the different methods of Paediatric practice compared to a more Western setting. It is also a good practical experience for an elective placement.
The Surgery centre is split into male and female wards, both with a capacity of approximately 30 beds and students are often permitted to assist in surgery.
