The Bangladesh Institute of Research and Rehabilitation in Diabetes, Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders (BIRDEM) is housed in two buildings; one is five stories and the other fifteen stories. The centre is equipped with a modern, sophisticated cardiac unit and also has a capacity of 600 beds. There are great indoor and outdoor facilities that cater for both diabetic and non-diabetic patients.
The centre is run by the Diabetic Association of Bangladesh and the hospital complex is described as being multi-disciplinary. It has been designated as a World Health Organisation “Collaborating Centre on Diabetes, Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders” and is a unique institution in Asia. The centre is also associated with the Ibrahim Medical College.
