The Nephrology Department began its operation with the opening of the Hospital Infantil Manuel de Jesus Rivera in 1982. It is the only pediatric nephrology center at national level, before this period, children were cared for by general pediatricians, internists or adult nephrologists. In its early days it had a capacity of 6 beds. In 1997 cooperation with a specialist in Milan began. In June 2000 project IRIS started, in cooperation with the Association of the Bambino Nefropatico of Milan, Italy and the Region of Italy (Lombardy) aimed at children with chronic renal failure. It supported the training of specialists and nurses, as well as drug and diagnostic studies. Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis was initiated in 2004 and the following year Hemodialysis and renal transplantation.
