The Hospital Santo Tomas (Saint Thomas Hospital) is the largest hospital administered by the Panama Ministry of Health and is also the most long-serving hospital in Panama. It was established in 1703 by the Bishop of Panama and has since grown from a small hospice into a leading hospital through a variety of expansions undertaken throughout its history; one of the largest expansions occurred in 1924 and in 2000 a further modernisation programme was established.
The hospital is a level one trauma centre, is also one of the biggest teaching hospitals in Panama and has a nuclear medicine facility.
