The Port of Spain General Hospital is located on Upper Charlotte Street in the capital city, is a public hospital that has fairly basic ward conditions and few advanced facilities. However, the hospital is the main referral and emergency hospital for Trinidad and Tobago and a paramedic service was introduced in 2000. The hospital’s services include an Accident and Emergency Department, an operating theatre, a blood bank, X-Ray and medical lab facilities and it is administrated by the North West Regional Health Authority (NWRHA). The hospital serves a local population of 500,000 people and is one of 17 institutions administered by the NWRHA.
HIV and drug abuse are very common in this region and there is also a significant amount of poverty. As a result of this combination, students interested in a psychiatry specialty will find this an interesting elective.
