Vaiola Hospital is the main hospital in Tonga, situated on Taufa’ahau Road on the outskirts of the capital city, Nuku’Alofa. The existing hospital is facing a long term upgrade funded by World Bank in conjunction with the Ministry of Health and is a general medical and general surgical hospital. Tonga has an interesting mix of health problems, with a combination of both developing world diseases, such as tropical infections, as well as developed world conditions, most notably, ischaemic heart disease and Type 2 diabetes, and students will have an opportunity to work on these cases directly as the elective experience at Vaiola is wide-ranging and hands-on, although students can elect a principle department, such as paediatrics, upon arrival.
There may also be opportunity to work with the World Health Organisation (WHO) as they have previously run immunisation programmes for Tonga from Vaiola hospital.
Applications are to be made through the Director of Health and students should allow months for a reply. Upon approval of their application, students will receive a letter which is to be presented upon arrival in Tonga to facilitate the appropriate visa.
