Hospital description

The Kobe University Hospital is a large, centrally located city referral centre. It has all major departments including plastic surgery and a twenty-four hour Emergency Department. The hospital was originally established as an affiliation with the Hyogo Prefectural Kobe Medical School in 1869,and was intended to provide medical services in the Kobe area. In 1967, it was transferred to the jurisdiction of Kobe University School of Medicine.

It is now one of the leading hospitals in Hyogo Prefecture and plays an important role in educating medical doctors as well as advancing medical standards. The Hospital is also responsible for providing preventive medicine, sanitation education, and an advisory service on medical procedures in the University and other general hospitals in the Kobe area.

The hospital has also played an important role as a base hospital for disaster and emergency medicine as well as for serving international patients, opening a dedicated International Patient Centre in October 2001. The centre also offers an interpretation service with the co-operation of the staff and international doctors/staff.
