The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital is the second largest hospital in Ghana and the only tertiary healthcare facility in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. It provides post-graduate teaching to the West African College of Surgeons. The hospital is centrally located in the Ashanti Region and is well-connected by road networks. As such the hospital is able to accept referrals from all the northern regions (Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions), Brong Ahafo, Central, Western, Eastern and parts of the Volta region of Ghana.
Originally part of a double hospital (African and European hospital, where people were treated according to ethnic origin), the Komfo Anokye hospital was created in a new facility in 1954/55 (the ‘European’ side of the hospital was relocated to make way for the project) and the new hospital named the Kumasi Central Hospital. The name was later changed to the Komfo Anokye Hospital in honour and memory of the powerful and legendary fetish priest, Komfo Anokye.
The hospital became a teaching hospital in 1975 and works in collaboration with the School of Medical Sciences of the University of Science and Technology, Kumasi.
