Ballarat Base Hospital is situated in the Grampians region of Victoria and is the largest hospital in the area, with a population extending from Bacchus Marsh to the South Australian border. Casualties of the 1850s Gold Rush and the Eureka Stockade highlighted the need for a healthcare facility and from these humble origins, Ballarat has become the principle referring hospital in the area, employing a staff of approximately 3,000. In 1997, it merged with nearby Queen Elizabeth’s Centre and the Grampian Psychiatric Services and all hospitals are run by Ballarat Health Services. The hospital provides an extensive range of medical and surgical services across each of the medical and healthcare specialties in a friendly and modern environment. In 2005, Ballarat received the Premier’s Award for the Outstanding Rural and Regional Health Service in Victoria.
