Mackay Base Hospital is being transformed into a state-of-the art facility with a $408 million redevelopment due for completion in late 2014. The redevelopment will include a new emergency department, outpatients department, delivery suites and special care nursery, intensive care unit and coronary care unit, day surgery and operating theatre suite, inpatient surgical and medical wards, renal support services, dental, allied health and mental health facilities.
The new $2.5 million cardiac catheter laboratory provides life-saving diagnostics and treatment to people with a range of heart conditions. Angiograms are being performed in Mackay for the first time and the service will soon progress to treatment, such as insertion of pacemakers.
A $1.5 million MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scanner allows for more medical imaging on-site. Patients no longer have to be transferred to a private facility for scanning, providing faster results and less disruption.
Public dental waiting times have been reduced with an extra 20,000 appointments provided in 2013 compared with the previous year—an increase of 18 per cent.
Hospital in the Home services are being delivered to allow eligible patients to receive care in the comfort of their home, with plans to expand the service in 2014-15.
