It is a modest, friendly hospital on the coast. The original hospital erected on the site during 1880-81 was little more than a four-room cottage with kitchen and a separate ward for Kanakas. The nucleus of the present hospital complex was opened by the Governor of Queensland, Sir William McGregor, on July 9 1914. Over the years Bundaberg Base Hospital has grown into the major medical centre in the Wide Bay/Burnett region.
The hospital is now an acute care facility with a wide range of services.
