A recently-renovated hospital serving the local and tourist community (particularly diving injuries from the Great Barrier Reef). The hospital is located on the sea front close to the town centre and is the major referral centre for Tropical North Queensland. Services include all major health specialties and 30 sub-specialties. The hospital also provides outreach specialist services to remote and rural areas, including obstetrics and gynaecology, anaesthetics, orthopaedics, general medicine, renal medicine, diabetes and thoracic medicine. Students taking electives in Cairns can expect to have a variety of extra-curricular activities available as the town is very popular with tourists.
