Founded in 1844, this hospital is the second largest general hospital in Singapore. It has 40 clinical and allied health departments, and 16 specialist centres with overall over 7000 healthcare staff. It is well known for its stroke treatment, respiratory medicine, and surgical departments. It is also a major referral centre for emergency medicine, diagnostic radiology, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, orthopaedic surgery, gastroenterology, general medicine and general surgery. The hospital houses the National Neuroscience Institute, Communicable Disease Centre, the Breast Clinic, and the Rehabilitation Centre.
