Weston Park Hospital is part of the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and is one of only three dedicated cancer hospitals in the UK. The hospital has a reputation as a centre of excellence for cancer treatment and research that is recognised across the world. It is therefore an excellent option for students who wish to specialise in Oncology.
The Weston Park Hospital is home to a leading radiotherapy department, often described as one of the best in the UK (and the only one in the vicinity of South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire). This means that Weston Park is ideally equipped to handle the 6,000 new cases of cancer diagnosed annually in the central North region alone and nearly 60,000 patient visits are received every year by the department.
The hospital also hosts an integrated, purpose-built Cancer Research Centre, which is funded in part through charitable gifts and donations. The research centre is credited as a pioneer of numerous modern advances within the field of cancer research.
Elective placements at this hospital are organised through the University of Sheffield’s elective programme.
