The Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) is part of the Newcastle Hospitals complex, which is run by the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This authority has a reputation for excellence in the provision health services and provides some of the safest and most advanced services in the country. The Ophthalmology department has one of the UK’s largest cataract treatment centres, but also offers the most advanced treatments of age-related eye problems such as ARMD (Age Related Macular Degeneration), the major cause of blindness in the UK.
