The Newcastle General Hospital served the people of Tyneside for hundreds of years in a variety of forms. Many of the services previously located at this hospital have now been moved to the nearby Freeman Hospital and Royal Victoria Infirmary. The General Hospital is now being reroled as the Campus for Ageing and Vitality, and is part of the University of Newcastle. The aim of the establishment is to develop the world’s premier centre for healthy ageing and living and will provide complimentary services to the world recognised Freeman Hospital.
This facility is a part of a major investment plan, which has funds in excess of £100 million, and is intended to ensure that Newcastle becomes nationally and internationally renowned as a leader in Ageing and Health. There is a partnership between the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Newcastle University and major retail provider Tesco, which is dedicated to achieving this aim and creating the UK’s very first Campus for Ageing and Vitality.
