Located in south-west Dublin, the Adelaide & Meath Hospital opened in June 1998. The hospital has a bed capacity of 625. The hospital is a major teaching center affiliated to the Health Science Department of the University of Dublin, Trinity College; it also incorporates the National Children’s Hospital. The hospital is a landmark development in Ireland’s acute hospital service and is one of the biggest healthcare projects ever undertaken by the Irish government; it is run by the Health Service Executive (HSE).

The Adelaide & Meath Hospital provides child-health, adult, psychiatric and age-related healthcare on one site. In order to offer such a comprehensive service the hospital employs some 3,000 people. It is a provider of local, regional, supra-regional and national specialities, including acting as the national urology centre, regional dialysis centre and a regional orthopaedic trauma centre.

The Adelaide & Meath Hospital provides a focus for a massively-growing, urbanised area with a predominantly young population.
