The Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) is the main teaching hospital affiliated to the University of Tasmania, located in the state capital which lies on the banks of the River Derwent. The hospital is over 200 years old and is the second oldest hospital in Australia. RHH provides acute, sub acute, mental health and aged care inpatient and ambulatory services to the population of southern Tasmania (about 240,000 people), and is the major refferal hospital for the state, employing 2,190 full time staff.
The RHH provides a comprehensive range of general and special medical and surgical services including many statewide services such as cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, extensive burns treatment, hyperbaric medicine, neonatal and paediatric intensive care and high risk obstetrics. It opened a new emergency department in 2007, providing an additional 41 beds to the hospital for assessment and observation.
Applications are through the University of Tasmania and electives are only open to international students between October and January, through the University of Tasmania Visitng Student Programme.
