Arnold Lodge was one of the first medium secure units in the United Kingdom. It continues to rank amongst the very best secure services in the UK (consistently in the top 10 nationwide).
The unit is small enough to be friendly and welcoming, with just 6 multidisciplinary teams led by Consultant Forensic Psychiatrists, but big enough to offer a wide range of specialist services, with the Male Mental Illness Service, the Male Personality Disorder Service and the Women’s Service.
With a strong history of innovation and research, together with a dynamic medical team, including many junior and senior trainees in psychiatry and forensic psychiatry, the atmosphere is welcoming, positive, lively, encouraging and inclusive. Previous elective students have said how welcome they felt, and how it was good to be part of a team and actively included in a range of opportunities.
Our in-patient work is characterised by its multidisciplinary nature. Forensic psychiatrists work closely with clinical psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists, highly specialised nurses and supportive managers to deliver high quality care. Our patients often come with a complex background of personal, family, social and mental health factors and a long history of contact with the criminal justice system.
Other work includes assessments of patients in prisons, other hospitals (low, medium and high secure) and frequent involvement with criminal justice agencies. Many of our forensic psychiatrists assist the criminal Courts with challenging cases. This can include giving oral evidence in Court in cases involving homicide, arson and serious sexual and other offences.
The many doctors at Arnold Lodge are also actively involved in teaching and academic research.
Elective students are always made very welcome and can expect a fascinating experience of forensic psychiatry. We can also arrange visits to other hospitals across the Midlands. See www.forensicpsychiatry.co.uk, or search the web for “forensic psychiatry training” for more information.
