The hospital has 144-bed wards divided into a male ward, a female ward, a pediatric ward (including a 6 bed special care nursery) and a maternity unit (antenatal and postnatal ward). The wards are all open concept much like that of field hospitals. Makeshift screens are only brought in when minor procedures need to be done on the ward or when a death has occurred. The six-bed assessment and labour unit, with two delivery rooms, sees some 2,000 babies are delivered each year. The cesarean section rate is a 7% (low for a referral hospital). As many women come from villages more than a day’s travel from Howard, there is an antenatal village for women to stay in during their last month of pregnancy. The distance from the antenatal village to the labour & delivery suite is known as the hundred yard dash.
