Part of the Southland District Health Board, the Southland Hospital is a district general hospital with 181 beds in Invercargill, right at the southern tip of South Island, and within easy distance of the crossing to Stewart Island. The hospital is a modern, state-of-the-art, facility and opened in late 2004 following an extensive re-development project. Southland Hospital is well equipped for its size and features modern medical imaging technology, including MRI, CT and Ultrasound capability and a Digital Radiology system (PACS), as well an electronic patient management system (iPM).

A range of services are provided from Southland Hospital, including acute medical and surgical, outpatient clinics, a 24-hour emergency department, and mental health inpatient care.

Southland Hospital is a University teaching facility and provides a training ground for medical interns, medical staff, nursing, midwifery, and allied health students. It is associated with the University of Otago, Dunedin. The hospital has a good neurology department and the staff are all very friendly and welcoming to new students.
