Please note that only students based the the University of Southampton medical school are eligible for a placement at the Macmillan Unit
The Macmillan Unit is situated in Christchurch Hospital which is part of the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals Trust. This is an NHS Unit, supported by the Macmillan Cancer Trust, a local charity. It offers specialist palliative care to patients with cancer and with difficult symptoms related to their cancer. The Macmillan Unit has an inpatient ward caring for 20 patients, a team of Palliative Care Sisters who visit patients in the community, a day centre and a hospital support team who see patients in the Royal Bournemouth Hospital, and on other wards in Christchurch Hospital. The ward does not offer long term care for patients who do not require specialist palliative care. The team works closely with the oncology teams at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital and Poole General Hospital.
Patients are referred to the unit via their GP or hospital consultant and receive a consultation from the Macmillan consultants either as an outpatient or via a home visit. Patients who have a stablised condition may be discharged from the centre and re-referred at a later date. This would be an excellent elective for students with a particular interest in Oncology and working with charities. The unit is scheduled for a rebuild in 2012, so this could be an interesting time to take an elective here.
