Hospital description

The hospital has a wide catchment area as it is the only medical centre between Dunedin and Christchurch. Timaru Hospital is part of the South Canterbury District Health Board and provides a range of inpatient, outpatient and community secondary services to the people of the South Canterbury region. The hospital provides 24/7 acute medical, surgical and maternity services, Assessment, Treatment & Rehabilitation (AT&R) services for older persons and a number of tertiary services through visiting clinicians.

The hospital’s surgical services include both elective services and a twenty-four hour district trauma service supported by twenty-four hour specialist cover in general surgery, orthopaedics and gynaecology.

This is a fairly remote region of South Island, but offers good opportunities to travel and see the rest of the island.
