A very modern and busy hospital dedicated to paediatrics, the Starship Children’s Hospital is also the main tertiary referral centre for New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. Located in Auckland in the north of North Island, the hospital provides a wide range of complex medical, surgical and mental health services for children throughout New Zealand. Excellent teaching is provided but the emphasis is for students to create their own opportunitites, to see patients and make the most of their time at the hospital. Starship is a major teaching centre and aims to lead the nation in paediatric training and research.
Services are provided in inpatient, outpatient, daystay and community settings, and in 2010 the hospital treated a total of 124,890 patients. Starship specialists travel throughout the New Zealand to provide outreach services.
Starship was opened on 18 November 1991 and was New Zealand’s first dedicated paediatrics hospital, and was named Starship due to its unusual design, which was created to appeal to children and young people. Starship is built around a central atrium with a rainforest theme, a playground and natural light.
