Barnsley District Hospital is a mid-sized hospital run by Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, a form of trusteeship that means the hospital is run and governed by local people. The hospital offers a wide range of services and has invested in some state-of-the-art equipment which, in addition to treating patients, can be used to assist hospital staff in their research work, some of which is regarded as pioneering in the medical community.
The hospital was built in the 1970s and serves over 250,000 local people. It is well-equipped and in 2010 cared for over 70,000 patients in the Accident and Emergency centre alone. The hospital services include (in addition to emergency services); outpatient clinics; inpatient services; and maternity and children’s services.
Barnsley District Hospital also provides a number of specialised services, including cancer and surgical services, in conjunction with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.
