The Nhkata Bay DistrictHospital is located in Nhkata Bay, the district capital of the region and one of the main ports on Lake Malawi. The hospital itself is relatively small but is set in pleasant surroundings. The local population is approximately 25,000 but there is also a relatively large visiting community as the area receives a lot of travellers.
Chichewa is the preferred language in the hospitals, so students may benefit from having an ear for languages, although English may also be used. The hospital received a donation from the National Bank of Malawi in 2006, however, there are still parts of the community that the hospital struggles to find the resources to treat. In 2010 the region received a grant in the form of The Essential Health Package from the Malawian government to build a new 250-bed facility, which will increase the range of services that the hospital can offer.
