The Sharm-el-Sheikh Hyperbaric Medical Center opened in 1993 and specialises in diving related injuries such as Decompression Sickness (also known as “The Bends” due to the bodily contorsions often suffered by those afflicted), The Center also provides a general service to the local population. In the last five years, the recompression chamber in the center has been one of the busiest in the world and has treated in excess of 1,200 diving injuries. This rise in activity could be linked to the growing popularity of Sharm-el-Sheikh for diving holidays.
The centre receives students and diving medical physicians from all over the world and provides accommodation for those working at the centre for a nominal price.
A new state-of-the-art new German made recompression chamber arrived at the centre in February 2011, which has enhanced the its ability to treat injured divers. The centre also offers diving eligibility medical examinations and care for those with E.N.T diving related complications; a service offered for those both travelling and living in the region. Additionally the centre is actively involved in the care of the local population by conducting G.P. surgeries every day.
There is also another Hyperbaric Medical Centre in Dahab, 100 km North of Sharm-el-Sheikh. This centre is run by the same group and there is potential for elective students to work in both centres. The centres have good contacts with the local Search & Rescue which can be useful for medical students interested in working in this area as it is sometimes possible for elective students to accompany the search and rescue team in certain interventions.
