The John Radcliffe Hospital was opened in the 1970s and is Oxfordshire’s main Accident and Emergency hospital. The hospital is part of the Oxforf Radcliffe NHS Trust and is located in Headington, which is about three miles out of Oxford city centre and is a large hospital facility, covering some 66 acres. The hospital also houses many departments of the Oxford University Clinical School as well as Oxford Brookes University’s School of Health Care.

In addition, the John Radcliffe campus houses the Children’s Hospital and the John Radcliffe Hospital Women’s Centre, and provides acute medical and surgical services, trauma, intensive care and cardiothoracic services.

The John Radcliffe Hospital has recently opened a new emergency department, which was judged the best designed hospital building in the country, in the Department of Health’s national Annual Building Better Healthcare Awards 2004.

In October 2009 the new Oxford Heart Centre opened at the John Radcliffe Hospital to meet the growing needs of heart patients in Oxfordshire and across the region.
