Durham was built in the early 19th Century and has been undergoing a major refurbishment programme during the last 10 years.

It is a Category B local prison serving the courts in the area.

There are a cluster of three prisons. One local remand prison (usually short length of stay), one women’s prison (young offenders, remand and long-term stays, as well a sa dangerous and severe personality disorders unit) and one high-security male prison (long stay, also has DSPD unit)
