Hospital description

The Butabika Hospital is also known as the Butabika National Referral Hospital and is located in Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. The hospital is a major referral centre for mental health and it caters for patients from all over Uganda. The hospital is in the south-eastern part of Kampala, close to Lake Victoria.

The hospital is a specialist mental health hospital that is fully funded by the Ugandan Ministry of Health. It was opened in 1955 and is the only referral hospital of its kind in Uganda. The hospital provides specialist care and management for all patients with mental and psychosocial problems on a referral basis, and also offers a variety of outpatient treatments to the local population.

The hospital also serves as a teaching hospital for Makarere University College of Health Sciences and offers training for high school graduates who wish to train to become Psychiatric Clinical Officers. This latter endeavour is the only school of its kind in East Africa.
