The West End Hospital is a private hospital of moderate size, in the city of Kumasi in the Asanti region of Ghana. It offers general medical, obstetric and paediatric services and is classed as a district hospital. The hospital has the stated aim of becoming a centre of excellence for healthcare and training by providing quality general and specialised medical services.
West End Hospital was named after the famous WESTEND KLINIKUM in Berlin, Germany and was established in 1978 as a clinic, growing into a hospital in 1985 as a reflection of the increasing diversity of services that were being offered. The hospital now cares for some 70,000 people each year (over 200 patients daily).
As it has grown, the hospital has become a trusted name in Ghanaian healthcare and is known for its specialist family planning services. It is popularly known as “The Kwakye-Maafo Hospital” because of distinguished services in fertility, obstetrics and gynaecology by the founder, a leading medical practitioner and former head of the Ghana Medical Association, Dr. J.K. Kwakye-Maafo.
West End Hospital cares for National Health Insurance registered patients as well as private patients, so students can expect to see a fairly diverse population if taking an elective at this hospital.
