The Tamale Teaching Hospital is a state run referral hospital in the city of Tamale. It was originally commissioned in 1974 as a Regional Hospital and is now fully accredited as a tertiary level healthcare provider for all three northern regions of Ghana. It also serves as the main teaching facility for the School of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University for Development Studies.
The hospital has been mandated (by Act 525 of the Ghana Health Service and Teaching Hospitals Act of 1996) to develop and ensure the provision of advanced clinical health services, to support training for both undergraduate and postgraduate medical professionals and to undertake research into health issues to support a healthier Ghanian population.
The Tamale Teaching Hospital is the third teaching hospital to be established in Ghana and has developed an excellent reputation for teaching young doctors. The hospital is also ambitious, with the stated aim of making the hospital into one of the safest in the country and for it to be one of the leading tertiary level hospitals in the West African sub-region.
The hospital is currently undergoing major expansion and rehabilitation with support from Ghana/Dutch governments. The 341 bed capacity hospital provides specialist services in the following areas: Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Surgery, Orthopaedics & Trauma, Internal Medicine, Child Health, Pathology, ENT , Endoscopy, Neurosurgery, Anaesthesia And Intensive Care Unit, Psychiatry, Dentistry and an Eye Unit. The Tamale Teaching Hospital has been accredited by Medical and Dental Council of Ghana, National Health Insurance Authority and the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. It also has full accreditation by the medical and dental council of Ghana for the training of house Officers or interns.
