Mumbwa Hospital is a newly instated District Hospital in the central province of Zambia. The current hospital is quite small, with only 76 beds for inpatients. This means that the hospital often experiences overcrowding and caring for all of the patients can be a challenge. A new hospital project for the Mumbwa District was announced in 2011. The new hospial will have a capacity of 200 beds, which should serve to alleviate the problems that the hospital is currently experiencing. The Zambian government has also committed to providing advanced equipment to the new hospitals, so that the district hospitals do not have to refer as many patients to the limited number of referral hospitals in the country. The referral hospital for Mumbwa District Hospital is currently Lusaka Teaching Hospital.
The district has a population of approximately 160,000 people.
