The Black Rock Psychiatric Hospital is a relatively large facility that is able to care for around 630 in-patients at any one time. There are ten wards in the hospital, including two forensic wards (medium and high security), and a ward for the learning disabled. Patients stay either in a dormitory or in single concrete rooms which are ‘cell-like’ in appearance.
The site on which the hospital stands is an old plantation house that was purchased by the Barbados Ministry of Health in 1891. The house was converted to a hospital and admitted its’ first patients in 1893. The hospital runs at a high percentage capacity, with an increase in patients over the Christmas and Crop Over periods. The hospital provides healthcare services for all mental illnesses and social illnesses such as those that result from substance abuse.
On an average month Black Rock treats around 45 out patients, who attend the hospital for counselling and therapy sessions. The hospital provides 24 hour care, 7 days a week with nursing care available for both in and out patients.
