Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) is Belize’s flagship healthcare provider and receives patients from all over Belize as it is the regional and national referral hospital for Belize. The hospital is equipped to handle medical cases that arise when patients are transferred to the hospital and it has three operating theatres to treat patients requiring surgery. The hospital is also well-equipped to look after maternity cases, with a dedicated labour theatre and delivery suite.
KHMH’s stated aim is to advance patient care in Belize by offering high quality medical services to all patients, national or international. The staff work in a variety of different specialties and the hospital is well-equipped, but students should be aware that they will be taking an elective in a developing country and as such the experience may be somewhat different that the medical care to which they have previously been exposed.
This is a good elective for students who want a placement in Central America but do not speak Spanish as the offical language is English (Belize was a British colony.)
