Punta Gorda (known locally as PG) is the southernmost town in Belize, and is the capital of the Toledo district. It has a population of some 6,000 people from a variety of ethnic backgrounds including; Mopan and Kekchi Maya, Garifuna, Creoles, Lebanese, East Indian and Chinese peoples. The Punta Gorda Hospital is a general hospital with some 30 beds and it provides services in General Medicine, Paediatrics and Maternity and Delivery to the entire Toledo District. Specialist clinics are carried out by visiting specialists from the Southern Regional Hospital and Primary Care services are also provided.
The hospital is also one of the poorest in the region, and has previously received medi CARE packages (sent to hospitals in need in developing countries), which have been donated by a variety of philanthropic societies, including The Rotary Club. These packages have a value of some $2,000.00 (USD) but can provide care to a value much in excess of this figure.
